NPC Backstory•Lost Mine of Phandelver

Sister Garaele — The Fallen Acolyte

Sister Garaele arrived in Phandalin eighteen months ago, dispatched by the Harpers to investigate rumors of a spellforge hidden beneath Wave Echo Cave. Her superiors in Silverymoon chose her precisely because she is forgettable — plain-featured, soft-spoken, the sort of elf who vanishes in a crowd.

What the Harpers don't know is that Garaele's faith in Tymora has been crumbling since the night she watched bandits murder a caravan of refugees while she hid in a ditch, paralyzed with fear. She still wears the goddess's silver coin around her neck, but she hasn't felt its warmth in months.

Secret: Garaele has already located a partial map to Wave Echo Cave — she found it sewn into the lining of a dead miner's coat at Barthens's Provisions. She hasn't reported this to the Harpers because she is planning to reach the Forge of Spells herself. If she can channel even a fraction of its power, she believes she can enchant her holy symbol strongly enough to feel Tymora's presence again — to manufacture the faith she has lost.

At the table: Garaele will eagerly help the party, offering healing and information. But if they mention Wave Echo Cave, her body language shifts — she becomes evasive, fidgets with her coin pendant, and changes the subject. A DC 14 Insight check reveals she's hiding something. If pressed, she offers to join the party as a guide, but her true goal is reaching the Forge before anyone else.

Tavern Layout•Any Module

The Wyvern's Chalice — A Tavern With Teeth

Ground Floor: A low-ceilinged common room (30 × 40 ft) dominated by a central hearth ringed with blackened dragon teeth — trophies the owner swears are authentic. Six rough-hewn tables seat 4 each. The bar is a repurposed church altar (DC 12 Religion to notice the faded holy symbols of Lathander carved underneath). Behind the bar, a trapdoor leads to the cellar.

The Cellar: Beneath the floorboards lies a vaulted stone cellar that predates the tavern by centuries. Twelve casks of ale line the walls, but the back wall has a bricked-up archway — behind it, a tunnel connects to the town's old sewer system.

Secret: The Whispering Booth. The corner booth nearest the kitchen has a peculiar acoustic property: conversations at the booth can be heard perfectly through a crack in the kitchen wall. The tavern owner, a retired spy named Haldric Voss, uses this to collect secrets he sells to the Zhentarim. The party might notice the booth is always "reserved" (DC 13 Perception) or catch Haldric lingering near the kitchen wall during important conversations.

Menu & Atmosphere: Haldric serves a signature drink called Dragon's Tongue — a spiced mead with a drop of alchemist's fire that makes it glow faintly orange (1 cp, harmless). The tavern smells of woodsmoke, roasted garlic, and old leather. A half-orc bard named Thokk plays a battered lute in the corner every Moonday, singing surprisingly tender ballads about lost love.

Encounter Hook•Curse of Strahd

The Toymaker's Last Request

Setup: As the party passes through Vallaki's town square, they notice Gadof Blinsky — the eccentric toymaker — sitting outside his shop, weeping into a half-finished puppet. He doesn't approach the party; he's too proud for that. But if anyone speaks to him:

What He Wants: Blinsky's beloved monkey, Piccolo, has gone missing. But this isn't a simple fetch quest. Piccolo was last seen entering the Wachterhaus — Lady Fiona Wachter's estate. Blinsky is terrified of Lady Wachter and won't go near the place. He offers the party any toy in his shop as payment, adding with genuine anguish: "Piccolo is the only friend who has never tried to leave Barovia."

What's Really Happening: Piccolo didn't wander into the Wachterhaus by accident. Lady Wachter's cult has been using the monkey to carry encoded messages between the Wachterhaus and a dead drop near the Vistani camp. The monkey was trained by Ernst Larnak, Lady Wachter's spy, using treats and repetition. When the party investigates, they'll find Piccolo in the Wachterhaus cellar — along with evidence of the cult's communications with Strahd.

Escalation: If the party retrieves Piccolo, Lady Wachter sends Ernst to Blinsky's shop that night to steal the monkey back — and silence the toymaker if necessary. This forces the party to decide: confront Lady Wachter openly (risking political chaos in Vallaki) or find a subtler solution.
